Darfur is in the Western part of North Sudan. Sudan has had 2 civil wars within the past century. Both civil wars were between Northern and Southern groups in Sudan. The Northern side was named the Government of Sudan(GOS), and the Southern side was named the Anya Nya. Genocide spread through the country as the war grew bigger. The population of Darfuri men, women and children were in the majority of those who were killed. Over 40,000 people were killed during the genocide.

Government of Sudan(GOS)
The Government of Sudan was on the side of a Islamic country. They believed that the country would not be civilized and united if it was a secular(a government without a religious base) country. The Government of Sudan was led by president Omar al Bashir. They were so set on a Islamic government and way of life that they began enforcing these beliefs and killing those who refused to obey. The GOS has killed thousands of innocent civilians trying to enforce this law. They are carrying out these actions and beliefs to this day.

"Yes, there have been villages burned, but not to the extent you are talking about. People have been killed because there is war. It is not in the Sudanese culture or people of Darfur to rape. It doesn't exist. We don't have it."

Anya Nya
Anya Nya is based in Southern Sudan. The Anya Nya wants a secular country. Through the years they have been led by three different people, all with the same beliefs. These people are Aggrey Jaden, Gordon Mourtat Mayen and Joseph Lagu. The war was started in the South after some Anya Nya troops(janjaweed) rebelled against the Government of Sudan. This rebellion was not taken well by the Government and the war was started. The Anya Nya are still rebelling against the government and not giving up.

United Nation Resolution
On September 17, 2006 the British Prime minister wrote a letter to the United Nations saying that there should be an international response to this crisis. The Prime Minister said that the genocide was "the greatest humanitarian disaster the world faces today." In response to the letter the UN Security Council deployed about 26,000 "peacekeepers" to end the violence in Darfur. China and Russia both worked to stop the UN's resolutions because they wanted to calm the Sudanese Government, but not enforce their own rules. China is one of Sudan's diplomatic ally because Sudan provides China with oil and China provides Sudan with military needs.
